For patients undergoing heart surgery, the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) can be close to 50%, depending on the type of surgery and patient characteristics. ​

That makes POAF the leading complication of cardiac surgery and brings the risk of adverse acute and long-term clinical outcomes including longer hospital and ICU stay.​
